Back in the Red, 2010

RD Looks like we get to see more from Lister (Craig Charles), Rimmer (Chris Barrie), Kryten (Robert Llewellyn) and the Cat (Danny John-Jules) in 2010. After an absence that went on far too long we returned to Red Dwarf in the 3 part mini-series, Back to Earth. The reunion series was short but sweet and seemed to reinvigorate both fans and the general public.

It must have reminded people how much they missed the 'Wee Rouge One' gracing our screens and rumours began to circulate that the British channel Dave, that broadcast Back to Earth, was restarting the series. Recently Robert Llewellyn confirmed these rumours to be true at dimension jump XV via his twitter account, his comments saying "Series 10 of Red Dwarf announcement just been made at DJ 09. To clarify the scripts have been commissioned, wont be filming til 2010".

While I don't consider this overwhelming confirmation, I'll take it. I have missed Red Dwarf and will be looking forward to a new series in whatever form it may take in the new year. If only they did more than 8 episodes a series though.

'Men Who Stare At Goats' has a trailer.

Men-Goats As unusual as the title is, the premise is much more-so. This film is based rather loosely on the best selling book from British journalist, Jon Ronson. A Sceptical truth seeker known for his many forays into the weird and wonderful worlds of conspiracy nuts and fringe dwellers. He often treats the subjects he undertakes with a surprisingly fair and humanising outlook. The book looks into the strange world of Military experiments and just how zany those in Military Intelligence can be. In fact it would seem that the Military has its fair share of loons and 'free-thinkers' as your normal community.

Starring Ewan McGregor, George Clooney, Kevin Spacey, Jeff Bridges and Rebecca Mader, the film follows a reporter (McGregor), trying to lose himself in the romance of war after his marriage fails. He gets more than he bargains for when he meets a special forces agent (Clooney) who reveals the existence of a secret, psychic military unit whose goal is to end war as we know it. The founder of the unit has gone missing and the trail leads to another psychic soldier (Spacey) who has distorted the mission to serve his own ends.

Bad Boys 3 in the pipeline

Bad BoysFor all you action junkies out there who find the movies lacking it seems that the Michael Bay, Jerry Bruckheimer, Will Smith and Martin Lawrence Combo is trying to work its way back onto our screens with the third installment of Bad Boys.

Hi Octane action is the tradition when it comes to the bad Boys movies and heres hoping that Columbia Pictures can work its magic to bring this series of movies back. Concerns will be had over the relatively high salaries expected of these Actors, Producers and Directors each with their subsequent rise to fame after the first two movies.

No contracts or deals have been made at this time.

New Avatar trailer online... Happy Avatar Day!!

Avatar Poster Apple Trailers have put up the newest and first teaser trailer for James Cameron's Avatar. We get our first taster of what I believe to be the true paradigm shift in the way movies are made and presented. This is a landmark film, not only for James Cameron's return to what people love him for, but also for its extensive use of new techniques in CGI, 3D cinematography and presentation.

Avatar stars Sam Worthington, Sigourney Weaver, Michelle Rodriguez, Zoe Saldana and Giovanni Ribisi.

While I believe we are not quite out of the "Uncanny Valley" yet we are certainly on the path to a complete blurring of the lines between real and generated. I am most definitely looking forward to seeing a new science fiction world from the mind of James Cameron, he is an artistic mind that has always produced interesting and wonderful worlds. It is clear just from this teaser trailer that Cameron has taken world creation to another level and a new franchise 'Universe' has been born.

Outland being re-made.

OutlandWarner Bros. has been reported to be resurrecting the 1981 'Sci-Fi Western', Outland to be written by Chad St. John and directed by Michael Davis. Hollywood Gang's Gianni Nunnari is producing, with the company's Craig Flores exec producing.

The original, starred Sean Connery as Marshal O'Neil on Jupiter's moon, Io. During his tenure miners are dying - usually violently. When the Marshal investigates he discovers the one thing all the deaths have in common is a lethal amphetamine-type drug, which allows the miners to work continuously for days at a time until they become "burned out" and expire. He follows the trail of the dealers, which leads to the man overseeing the colony. Now O'Neil must watch his back at every turn, as those who seek to protect their income begin targeting him. Outland was originally written and directed by Peter Hyams.

The remake takes the general concept from the original and expands it into a more epic "tent-pole" production. The theme of the original is said to be preserved but takes place on a city-station orbiting the moon. A Police Officer uncovers a murderous conspiracy that endangers the entire city. With a week before retirement back to Earth, the hero must choose between walking away with his wife, or taking on a private army with his overachieving ex-partner and wife's former boyfriend.

The Hollywood Gang are reportedly shepherding the production. They have two productions upcoming, Everybody's Fine starring Robert DeNiro, Kate Beckinsale and Drew Barrymore and Shutter Island reteaming Martin Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio.

Not surprisingly, no actors are yet attached to the project.

New Moon promo sheds light on whats to come.

New Moon A promo was recently released for the next chapter in the Twilight Saga, New Moon. Yes that is the sound of millions of girls swooning or screaming with glee, and maybe a few blokes sighing heavily. I am not looking forward to this all that much but many people I know (yes mostly young women) are certainly keen to get to the next movie. They have read every book and have a lot of the tie-in merchandise, and it reminds me of myself with other franchise properties.

This to me seems to have the feel of a fem-geek version of the anticipation the general "real" geek population feels for the release of things like a new Star Wars film. Finally, I am on the outside looking in as I see many women enter the traditionally Nerdly domain of franchise anticipation. Sure the Emo and Goth crowd are feeling impinged upon, there usual dark and fake-enigmatic ways are now more mainstream thanks to the mega-influx in Gothic genre media and the new popularity of Vampires. It has gone from fringe to front and centre. I am finding it interesting that people like my Sister, other female family and girl friends are now the ones coming across as weird; there conversations filled with arcane knowledge of modern mythologies and literary scenarios. Sure we saw it with some kids and the Harry Potter craze, but I think I notice it more-so now because people who consider themselves 'cool' have totally fallen into the normally Geek-Fandom trappings of franchise love.

Robert Downey Jr. as the Vampire Lestat?

RDJ If the rumours are true we may see Robert Downey Jr taking on the role of the Vampire, Lestat. The central character of the Vampire Chronicles. The role has been played previously by, Tom Cruise in Interview with a Vampire and Stuart Townsend in Queen of the Damned.

I can't say I am at all surprised by the resurgence of the Vampire Chronicles as a viable film franchise. The success of Twilight has pretty much assured the release of a slew of Vampire-based productions, and why not go back to a source material that has a large following. On her website, Anne Rice mentions a brief history of her potential novel to film/tv adaptations. While there was always something in the works not much has come of it.

If a star such as Robert Downey Jr. were attached to a new Vampire Chronicles pic, I think it would solidify any chance it had of being made. However, something to always consider is Downey's ever tightening schedule. If there is a new Lestat movie on the horizon I don't believe it's going to be any time before 2011.

Rest in Peace, John Hughes.

John Hughes John Hughes, the man that brought us the many enduring and endearing adventures of the 'Brat Pack' has died today, at the age of 59. The Director and Writer, suffered a Heart Attack while out for a morning walk in New York.

John Hughes is responsible for some of the seminal films of an entire generation, his directorial works include Sixteen Candles, The Breakfast Club, Weird Science, Ferris Bueller's Day Off, Planes, Trains and Automobiles and Uncle Buck. He has been called the 'Bard of Teen Angst' if not only for connecting well to the youth of the 80's but also redefining the Teen movie genre.

John's biggest box office success was 1990's Home Alone which he wrote and produced.

Our thoughts are with John's family and friends, he will be missed and not forgotten.

Zombieland, "Red Band" trailer.

Zombieland Poster The Zombieland (Red Band) trailer has been released and I have to say it makes me even more jazzed about this upcoming comedy release. Mike and I took a look at it in our Trailer Roundup and I can only echo again those same sentiments. It looks like a lot of fun and this new trailer greatly expands on what the audiences will see on Zombieland's, 9th October release date. Aussie cinema-goers will have to wait until, 10th December unfortunately.

Directed by Ruben Fleischer and starring Woody Harrelson, Emma Stone, Jesse Eisenberg, Amber Heard and Abigail Breslin

Unsurprisingly, Ruben Fleischer has stated that Shaun of the Dead was an inspiration for this film.

Just a little note for people who may wonder - "What the hell does Red Band mean?". It's a fairly obvious answer. The 'Red Band' refers directly to the Red colour of the ratings banner, "This preview has been approved for RESTRICTED audiences". For nearly all trailers there is a 'Green Band' version, "This preview has been approved for all audiences" which is simply devoid of large amounts of violence, nudity or blood and gore, so it can be made widely available to large numbers of audiences. Red Band trailers can only be shown at the front of other Mature rated films.
